The nine types
Nine strategies, grouped three ways to show how they relate.
These are nine strategies for getting through the world. Most people recognize fragments of several before one settles as home.
The three groupings below are three cuts through the same nine types, each sorting by a different feature: which core emotion a type is built to manage, how it habitually moves to get what it needs, and how it responds when things don't go its way.
- 1The Reformer
- 2The Helper
- 3The Achiever
- 4The Individualist
- 5The Investigator
- 6The Loyalist
- 7The Enthusiast
- 8The Challenger
- 9The Peacemaker
By centre
The most foundational grouping, and the least disputed across schools. Each centre organizes around a core emotion its three types are built to manage — Body around anger, Heart around shame, Head around fear. Full detail on centres.
By Hornevian stance
Karen Horney's three strategies for getting needs met — moving against, toward, or away from others — brought into the Enneagram by Claudio Naranjo and formalized as a named grouping by Riso and Hudson. This describes an observable strategy, not how a type consciously sees itself.
By Harmonic group
Riso and Hudson's own grouping, distinct from Horney's — sorted by how each type habitually responds when it doesn't get what it wants: reframe past it, set the feeling aside and solve the problem, or react openly and want the disappointment acknowledged.
